A downloadable game for Windows and Linux

A roguelike with a modular limb system, based around mutation as an advancement mechanic.

In HYDR@, you play as an individual with the ability to mutate thier form; not at will, mind, and not fully controllable. By drinking the blood of your slain foes, your form will shift to be as theirs.

The limb system this creates thus allows for a deep combat system of targeting different limbs, damaging and dismembering specific segments of creatures bodies.

Unfortunately, unfinished; and liable to stay that way, barring full rewrite. (hey, check back in a decade and see if there's any news on that front!)

Requires Mono 6.12/.NET Framework 4.8 to run.

Changelog

Final 25/05/2021 -

  • Wrapped everything up, no more development

I wrote (and rewrote) the world creation system, populating dungeons with creatures, and numerous bugfixes, too many to count, over the past year and a half. At this point, it's no longer fun to work on, due to design decisions made early in development not having taken into account later development. (indeed, the early versions were prototypes designed just to get off the ground with no thought to future mechanics)

As it stands, there are 19 biomes (level generators), that populate themselves with creatures, that you can move through, and the mutation system is fully implemented, with a menagerie of creatures to experiment with. However, there is no defined objective to play though, and there are certain instabilities (notably, under some conditions, staircases may be spawned in unreachable positions).

0.0.0.3 (Out of date!) 04/07/2019 -

  • Oh boy a whole load of stuff, basically the whole thing has been reworked.
  • Time display in the UI.
  • Inter-dungeon movement.
  • Themed dungeons.
  • New dungeon generation algorithms; BSP and Cellular Automata.
  • Turns out cubits are actually armspans rather than handspans; units have been updated to the correct units of ertos and ephaim.
  • New AIs that actully do stuff!
  • A total rework of the magic system; spellcasting is a limb intrinsic rather than related to brains, those only help cooling down spells.
  • Saving and loading!
  • A host of (hopeful) optimizations and bugfixes.
